The most beautiful thing about Ichigo’s reaction to Rukia jumping in front of Tsukishima’s sword is that you can just see the “Not again, not her,” on his lips and in his mind. Like their first meeting, taking the blow for him. Like his mother’s death. All his nakama lining up to risk their lives for him, for him, none of it he feels he deserves.

But not only that—what if Tsukishima takes her? What if he alters her? What if Rukia sees him as an enemy? What if he himself is erased from her past? Worse yet, what if she ends up like all the rest he couldn’t lean on? She had come through for him, when she was singularly the person who was there to help him when everyone else had turned on him—and now, he was going to lose her? Again? In a way even more painful? Not being able to see her was bad enough, but seeing her without any flicker of recognition or companionship in her eyes? It would be unbearable.
Not her. Not for me. Not again.
Not now, when I just got her back.
Not ever.
